Fukuoka Airport to Hakata with a group and big suitcases
Fukuoka Airport is famously close to the city, which is why almost every guide stops at "take the subway, it's five minutes." With four or more people and full-size cases that advice quietly breaks: the subway does not reach the international terminal, and of the airport buses we checked, only the one to Tenjin says in writing that it has a luggage hold. A nine-seat taxi is listed at ¥6,940 an hour.
The thing that makes this different from Tokyo
At Narita or Haneda the question is how to survive ninety minutes with your bags. Here the ride is short enough that comfort stops being the issue and handling becomes it: how many times you pick the cases up, how many gates and escalators you drag them through, and whether the vehicle has somewhere to put them.
Counted that way, the cheapest option is not the easiest one.
Route by route, from the international terminal
| Option | Goes to | Fare | Luggage hold? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nishitetsu bus, stands 6–7 | Hakata Station Chikushi-guchi | ¥400 (¥380 by IC/credit) | Not stated |
| HEARTS airport bus, stand 11 | HEARTS Bus Station Hakata (2F) | Not published | Not stated |
| Nishitetsu Airport Express, stand 8 | Tenjin Highway Bus Terminal (non-stop) | ¥500 (¥480 by IC/credit) | Yes — stated |
| Free shuttle → domestic → subway | Hakata, Tenjin | Shuttle free + subway fare | Shuttle: not stated |
| Jumbo taxi (up to 9 seats) | Anywhere | from ¥6,940 per hour, per vehicle | Yes — 8+ cases |
Read the right-hand column again. The only airport bus that tells you in writing it has a luggage hold is the one that does not go to Hakata. Nishitetsu's Airport Express page instructs passengers to load their own suitcases into the hold and to be careful not to take someone else's out. The Hakata-bound page says nothing about luggage at all.
That is not proof the Hakata buses have no hold — it is proof that nobody will tell you before you are standing at the door with four cases. If your hotel is near Tenjin anyway, the choice makes itself.
Why "just take the subway" fails here
The subway station is under the domestic terminal. There is no station at international. Getting to the platform means: exit 1A or 2A, escalator to the first floor, stand 1, free shuttle bus, then the domestic terminal, then the ticket gates.
| Shuttle fare | Free, for airport users |
|---|---|
| From international, daytime | Every 6–7 minutes, 7:00–18:59 |
| From international, evening | Every 8 min (19:00–20:59), 10 min (21:00), 15 min (22:00 onward) |
| First / last from international | 6:17 / 23:21 |
| Last from domestic | 23:19 |
The frequency is genuinely good. The problem is that with cases you are now doing two boardings and two alightings instead of one, plus a ticket machine, plus the gates — for a journey that is under half an hour of actual travel.
When a jumbo taxi is the cheap option
One Fukuoka operator, Fukuoka Lucky Taxi Group, publishes both numbers that matter: its premium jumbo taxi seats up to nine people and takes eight or more suitcases, at a charter rate of ¥6,940 per hour within the Fukuoka city area. Other operators list nine-seat jumbo taxis without publishing a case count.
| Group size | Bus at ¥400 each | One jumbo taxi, 1 h charter |
|---|---|---|
| 2 people | ¥800 | ¥6,940 |
| 4 people | ¥1,600 | ¥6,940 |
| 6 people | ¥2,400 | ¥6,940 |
| 7 people | ¥2,800 | ¥6,940 (≈¥990 each) |
At seven people the difference is about ¥4,100 for the whole group — roughly the price of one airport meal — to go door to door with the cases in the back instead of on your knees. Below four people it is not close, and the bus wins easily.
Note the unit: that is per vehicle, per hour, not per person and not per trip. A city-centre drop-off is well inside an hour, so one hour is the realistic minimum you are buying.
Metered fares, if you would rather not charter
Fukuoka's taxi meters were revised on 1 July 2026:
| Vehicle | Flagfall | Distance increment |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | ¥600 to 1.1 km | ¥100 per 287 m |
| Large | ¥720 | ¥100 per 176 m |
| Extra-large | ¥780 | ¥100 per 148 m |
A 20% surcharge applies between 22:00 and 05:00. A jumbo runs on the large or extra-large scale, so the meter climbs roughly twice as fast per kilometre as a standard cab — which is the reason the hourly charter exists.
Booking a jumbo: what the operators say, and what actually happens
Fukuoka Lucky Taxi Group takes bookings by phone and through a web form, and states that same-day booking is possible. It also asks you to say "premium jumbo taxi" to the operator when you book, which tells you something: the jumbo is a specific vehicle they have a few of, not a category they can conjure.
Local note. Jumbos are effectively never available on the rank — you will not walk out and find one waiting. Book direct with a taxi company, and treat the day before as the deadline even though the operator says same-day is possible. At the international terminal the rank is immediately outside the arrivals hall, and a pre-booked car waits just short of the rank rather than in it. International terminal to Hakata Station is about 20 minutes.
So which one
| Your situation | Take |
|---|---|
| 1–3 people, cabin bags | Shuttle + subway, or the ¥400 bus |
| 1–3 people, big cases, going to Tenjin | Airport Express — the one with the stated hold |
| 4–6 people with cases | Two standard taxis, or one jumbo if the fare split works |
| 7–9 people with cases | One jumbo, booked ahead |
| Arriving after 23:21 at international | Taxi — the free shuttle has stopped |
What this page does not tell you
Three things we wanted and could not confirm from a citable source. The journey time and frequency of the Nishitetsu bus from the international terminal to Hakata Station — the route page publishes neither, and the timetable is a PDF we could not read reliably. The HEARTS fare — the figures on their page render as masked characters. And the subway fare from Fukuoka Airport to Hakata or Tenjin: the airport's own page defers to a journey-planner rather than printing it, and the subway's published fare table is a zone chart we could not resolve to these stations. Fukuoka's subway is zone-priced from ¥210 to ¥380, and this trip is at the short end, but we are not going to guess the exact figure on a page that asks other people not to guess. There is also no official guidance we could find on whether baggage carts may be taken from the arrivals hall to the rail station or bus stands.
