Itoshima, Takachiho and Kurokawa without a rental car
All three are reachable without driving, and the buses are better than English guides suggest — Takachiho has four departures a day from Hakata, not the two from Kumamoto everyone writes about. What actually goes wrong is different in each place: the gorge boat closes online sales two days before, Kurokawa's buses are all reservation-only, and Itoshima is easy to reach and hard to move around in.
Takachiho: go from Hakata, not Kumamoto
Almost every English page routes you to Takachiho via Kumamoto. That is the worse option.

Hakata departures leave from stand 35 at the bus terminal. Kumamoto is cheaper and shorter, but with two departures a day a single missed connection ends the day. Four departures is what makes Takachiho plannable at all.
The gorge boat is the part that goes wrong
The rowing boats under the waterfall are the reason most people go. They are also the single most common way a Takachiho day falls apart, because the booking rules are not what visitors expect.

Read the closing rule again: 9:00 a.m., two days before. If you decide on the plane, you cannot book. And there is no phone number to call and no list to join — the only remaining route is the same-day queue.
Takachiho's tourism association publishes the current same-day wait as a live figure on its own boat page. When we checked it read 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours. Check it yourself before you commit a day to this:

Boats also stop running when the river is high, during the safety inspections in January, April, July and October, and after any earthquake of shindo 3 or above. There is no dedicated car park for the boats, which matters even to people who did drive.
The realistic plan: book online the moment your dates are fixed, no later than three days out. If you missed that window, arrive at opening and treat the boat as a maybe — with the last bus back to Hakata leaving in the afternoon, a four-hour queue and a return bus do not both fit in one day.
Kurokawa Onsen: three buses, all reservation-only

About 2 hours 36 minutes from Hakata, about 2 hours 59 minutes from Tenjin. Every service requires a reservation — there is no turning up at the stand.
The fare, where two official sites disagree
Nishitetsu's page for this route lists ¥4,000 from Tenjin. Hita Bus, which runs the service jointly, publishes a fare revision dated 1 October 2025 showing ¥3,900 from Tenjin and ¥3,800 from Hakata Bus Terminal and Fukuoka Airport.
We use the Hita Bus figures, because that revision is the more recent document. Budget ¥3,900 and expect ¥3,800 — but this is exactly the kind of gap that makes a printed fare worth checking at the counter.
Note what the arrival times mean. The earliest bus puts you in Kurokawa at 12:29. Kurokawa is a bathing village, not a sightseeing town: the reason to go is the rotenburo meguri pass and an evening in a ryokan. A day trip from Fukuoka gets you a few hours and a bus back.
Itoshima: easy to reach, hard to move around
This is the opposite problem from the other two. The train is not an issue at all.

Then you arrive, and the coast you came to see is spread over about fifteen kilometres with almost nothing connecting it.
Itoshima's own tourism association tells visitors, in writing, that the buses are very infrequent and that you need to research and plan in detail before you come. When the destination's own marketing body says that, believe it.

That middle row is the trap. The hours when a visitor is actually out sightseeing are the hours when the ordinary bus is replaced by something you had to reserve.

The tourism association's own guidance for cycling is to allow at least four hours, and six to eight to do it properly. That is the honest shape of an Itoshima day without a car: one coastal stretch, done slowly, rather than a list of three beaches.
What this page does not tell you
The Kumamoto to Kurokawa Onsen route. A cross-Kyushu bus exists — Kumamoto Prefecture's own site confirms it, reservation-required, about 150 minutes — but the operator's site would not load for us, so we have no fares or times to give you. Also missing: the rail fare from Hakata or Tenjin to Chikuzen-Maebaru (the through-fare table is published as a scanned image we could not read reliably), the one-way fare on the Ito-shima-go bus, and rental bicycle prices, locations and opening hours in Itoshima. Return bus times from Kurokawa and Takachiho are not listed here for the same reason — we confirmed the outbound timetables and not the inbound ones.
